In 2006, the Canal Chapter presented Removal Satisfies the Condition, a solo exhibition by Jordan Seiler. The show was an extension of Seiler’s PublicAdCampaign, an ongoing public art project dedicated to reclaiming public ad space from commercial forces, and questioning the nature and usage of our shared environment. The space featured common structures, reclaimed from the public domain and arranged for viewing within an alternate setting. By removing the pieces from their urban habitat, viewers were able to acknowledge the massive commercial influence possessed by seemingly powerless objects. Though not public in its execution, the show’s permanent removal of these public advertising structures satisfied the project’s condition: trading public dialogue for a deeper individual investigation of our public environment.
